Mekka Consulting

Alexander Repiev

BEFORE BECOMING a consultancy we've passed through several evolutionary stages, gaining some invaluable experience in the process. To me, it's never been a secret that, marketing & advertising business is essentially a consulting business. A marketer of adman must be a kind and patient "family doctor" for his clients. That's exactly what we try to be.

Throughout my career in marketing and advertising, I've been consulting many Russian and Western firms.

Mekka Advertising

In 1995 I left the position of VP Marketing at a US company and established in Russia an agency Mekka Advertising. Among our clients were dozens of Russian and Western companies operating in Russia.

In those days, Russian firms had no idea of what market economy is about. Their marketing culture was as good as nil. And so offering them professional marketing and advertising services was like offering computers to Australian bushmen. Western companies did not understand the Russian market and mechanically translated their way of doing business to the Russian bizarre soil.

It was quite an experience! We spent one hell of a lot of time educating people in things marketing. Some Russian companies and CEO's, after several generations of command economy, were too hard to grasp even rudiments of market economy. Unfortunately, all too many of them had to be broke first even to start thinking about the client, marketing, etc.

That prompted me to write the book "The Savvy Advertiser."

"The Savvy Advertiser"

The advertising guru David Ogilvy wrote: "Clients get the advertising they deserve." The same could be said about marketing. The bane of advertising and marketing is that it cannot be done without the client (advertiser) understanding at least the elements.

In an attempt to help the advertiser in 2001 I authored a book "The Savvy Advertiser," which after a painstaking testing on dozens of readers coming from different backgrounds was published in 2002. It attracts much appraise. Now the third editions is being prepared.

A. Repiev School: Advertising & Marketing

Years of teaching advertising and marketing at undergraduate and MBA levels left me unhappy with somewhat scholastic curricula. I wanted to teach what I believed is the most important marketing thinking and real creativity in marketing and advertising.

In 2002 I established my own school in Moscow A. Repiev School of Marketing & Advertising. Its mainstay is distance courses and seminars, which I conduct in Russia, CIS and other countries. When its consulting branch became mature, it was time to set up a specialized consulting shop.

Mekka Consulting

Thus, Mekka Advertising became Mekka Consulting. We did not start from scratch. Under our belt was a formidable experience of marketing and advertising projects in Russia, of dozens of "lemon" clients, of gaffes and wins. We understood that now that Russian markets become ever more competitive, decisions have to be made "at a new level of thinking" (A. Einstein). This thinking must be marketing thinking. Some seasoned clients understand that, others begin to grasp that only after our training programs, after our papers and the book.

Our team

Mekka Consulting would be impossible without a good creative team. The head of the team is me, Alexander Repiev (my bio).

In advertising since 1966. I began as a copywriter at Vneshtorgreklama, the then only ad agency in the USSR.

In marketing since 1988. Began as Marketing Manager at Rank Xerox.

Worked for a variety of companies in Russia and elsewhere.

Our valuable acquisition is economist and marketer  Boris Klyuchkovsky. A young, efficient achiever, with "dynamite" and superb marketing thinking.

Office manager
Irina Podbereznaya.

We benefit a lot from the large practical experience of corporate management of Ivan Repiev. He is also a vice-president of a Moscow bank.

The responsibility of
Alyona Afonina
is Internet and design.

Our partners

Marketing and advertising do not exhaust all the problems with which our clients come to us. In questions outside of our competence we use the services of our partners, consultants in other fields.
